Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway
Minnesota
47.0 miles
Winding 47 miles through Minnesota’s northern lake country, the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway connects Grand Rapids to Effie along a route that lives up to its evocative name. This National Scenic Byway traces the boundary between civilization and the vast Chippewa National Forest, offering travelers a glimpse into one of America’s most pristine wilderness areas.
The drive reveals a tapestry of glacial lakes, towering pines, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. Watch for bald eagles soaring overhead, white-tailed deer grazing at forest edges, and if you’re lucky, a glimpse of Minnesota’s iconic loons on one of the countless lakes dotting the landscape. Stop at Marcell to explore the Edge of the Wilderness Discovery Center, or detour to one of several access points into the Chippewa National Forest for hiking and wildlife viewing.
Autumn transforms this corridor into a spectacular display of gold, crimson, and orange, making September through early October the most breathtaking time to visit. Summer brings lush greenery and opportunities for fishing and paddling.
Allow two to three hours for the drive itself, though the many scenic pullouts and small-town cafes along the way invite you to linger longer. This is a road meant to be savored, not rushed.
