Interstate State Park
Minnesota (Chisago County)
Interstate State Park sits along the dramatic Dalles of the St. Croix River in Chisago County, holding the distinction of being Minnesota’s first state park. Its 288 acres pack a geological punch that belies the modest size — the park is home to the world’s largest concentration of glacial potholes, some plunging more than 60 feet deep into ancient basalt rock formations carved by meltwater torrents over 10,000 years ago.
The real draw here is the riverfront scenery. Towering basalt cliffs rise above the St. Croix, and the park’s network of trails winds through these formations with overlooks that reward every climb. The Pothole Trail is the must-do — a one-mile loop past dozens of potholes with interpretive signs explaining the geology. For longer outings, the River Bluff Trail follows the cliff edge with sweeping views into Wisconsin, where the park’s sister site mirrors the landscape across the water.
Rock climbing is permitted on designated cliff faces, drawing climbers from across the Upper Midwest. Kayaking and canoeing on the St. Croix are equally popular, and the park serves as a launch point for paddling the federally designated St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
Fall is the prime season — the hardwood canopy blazes with color against the dark basalt, and summer crowds thin considerably. Spring brings wildflowers and dramatic river levels from snowmelt.
Expect well-maintained trails, accessible geology exhibits at the park’s interpretive center, and a compact but rewarding experience that pairs naturally with a day trip from the Twin Cities, just an hour north.
