Inspiration Peak State Wayside sits atop one of the highest points in western Minnesota, rising 1,750 feet above sea level in Otter Tail County. Established in 1931 after author Sinclair Lewis championed its preservation, this compact wayside offers one of the most rewarding short hikes in the state — a steep but brief climb up 173 stone steps to a panoramic overlook that stretches across the rolling glacial hills of the Alexandria Moraine.

From the summit, visitors can see for miles in every direction — a patchwork of farmland, prairie, woodlands, and dozens of lakes dotting the landscape below. It’s the kind of view that makes you understand how the place got its name. Sinclair Lewis himself called it the most beautiful spot in America, and while that’s a bold claim, the vista makes a convincing case.

The wayside is small — there’s no campground or extensive trail system here. This is a stop-and-marvel kind of place. The main trail to the peak is roughly a quarter mile, manageable for most visitors though the incline is real. Wildflowers line the path in summer, and the hilltop meadow blooms with prairie grasses and native plants.

Visit in early October for peak fall color, when the surrounding hardwoods turn the landscape into a quilt of amber and crimson. Summer evenings are equally rewarding, with long golden light stretching across the hills. Budget about 30 to 45 minutes for the full experience — brief but genuinely memorable.
