Lake Carlos State Park sits on the shores of Lake Carlos in Douglas County, Minnesota, offering 1,175 acres of rolling hills, hardwood forests, and some of the clearest lake water in the state. The park occupies a landscape shaped by glaciers, with deep kettle lakes and wooded ridges that feel more like northern Minnesota than the surrounding prairie.

Lake Carlos itself is the main draw — a deep, spring-fed lake with excellent water clarity that makes it one of the best swimming and fishing spots in the Alexandria Lakes area. Anglers target walleye, northern pike, and largemouth bass, while swimmers and kayakers enjoy the clean, sandy beach. The park’s trail system covers roughly 10 miles through oak forests and open meadows, with options for hiking, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding depending on the season.

The campground includes both drive-in and walk-in sites, many nestled among mature trees with good spacing for privacy. A handful of sites sit close enough to the lakeshore to catch evening breezes off the water. For those who prefer a roof overhead, the park also offers a guest house.

Summer weekends between June and August are the busiest, but September brings quieter trails and peak fall color along the hardwood ridges. Winter visitors will find groomed ski trails and a frozen lake landscape worth the cold.
