Glendalough State Park sits on 1,924 acres in Otter Tail County, tucked into Minnesota’s lake country where prairie meets hardwood forest. What sets it apart is its history as a private estate — decades of limited access left its lakes remarkably pristine and its landscape less disturbed than nearly any other park in the region.

The centerpiece is Annie Battle Lake, designated a heritage fishery where only catch-and-release fishing with artificial lures is allowed. The result is a lake teeming with largemouth bass, bluegill, and northern pike in numbers rarely seen at public waters. Bring a canoe or rent one on-site — no motors are permitted, so the water stays glass-calm most mornings.

Hikers will find roughly 9 miles of trails winding through oak savanna, wetlands, and tallgrass prairie. The Beaver Pond Interpretive Trail is a standout, offering boardwalk sections over marshy ground where great blue herons and trumpeter swans are common sights. In winter, the trails convert to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes.

The park offers a walk-in campground with cart-in sites — no drive-up spots here, which keeps things quieter than most state park campgrounds. Sites are well-spaced among the trees and feel genuinely secluded. A yurt is also available for year-round rental.

Visit in late September for peak fall color reflecting off the lakes, or come in June when wildflowers blanket the prairie. Glendalough rewards visitors who prefer their nature a little less managed and a lot more wild.
