Frontenac State Park

Perched on the bluffs above Lake Pepin—a wide, natural lake formed by the Mississippi River—Frontenac State Park offers some of the most dramatic river valley views in Minnesota. Spread across 2,226 acres in Goodhue County, the park sits where prairie, hardwood forest, and river bottomland converge, creating an unusually diverse landscape for its size.

Birders consider Frontenac one of the state’s premier destinations. Over 260 species have been documented here, and the spring warbler migration draws observers from across the Upper Midwest. The blufftop trails provide eye-level views of raptors riding thermals above the valley, while the lowland paths wind through floodplain forest where bald eagles nest.

Thirteen miles of hiking trails range from easy river-bottom walks to steep bluff climbs that reward with panoramic views of Lake Pepin and the Wisconsin bluffs beyond. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over in winter, when the snow-covered bluffs are especially quiet. Mountain biking is permitted on select trails, and the park’s location along the Mississippi makes it a natural stop for paddlers.

Fall is arguably the best time to visit, when the hardwood canopy ignites in color against the blue expanse of Lake Pepin below. Spring migration season (late April through May) is a close second for anyone with binoculars.

The park is located just south of the historic village of Frontenac, one of Minnesota’s oldest European settlements, adding a layer of history to an already compelling landscape.
