Sanilac Petroglyphs Historic State Park protects one of Michigan’s most remarkable archaeological treasures — a series of Native American rock carvings etched into a sandstone outcrop centuries ago. Spanning 240 acres in rural Sanilac County, this small but significant park offers something you won’t find anywhere else in the Lower Peninsula: a direct, tangible connection to the indigenous peoples who shaped this landscape long before European settlement.

The petroglyphs themselves depict figures, animals, and abstract designs carved into exposed Marshallstone sandstone, believed to date back 300 to 1,000 years. A short interpretive trail leads visitors to the carvings, which are sheltered beneath a protective pavilion. Informational signage explains what’s known about the symbols and the Anishinaabe people who created them. It’s a quietly powerful experience — more contemplative than adventurous.

Beyond the petroglyphs, the park features over a mile of hiking trails winding through second-growth forest and wetland areas. Birding is rewarding here, particularly during spring and fall migration, and wildflower displays brighten the forest floor in May and June. The park is day-use only — there are no camping facilities on-site — so plan accordingly if you’re staying overnight in the Thumb region.

The best time to visit is late spring through early fall, when trails are dry and interpretive programs are most active. The park sees lighter crowds than Michigan’s lakefront destinations, making it an ideal stop for travelers who appreciate history, nature, and a little solitude off the beaten path.
