Sleeper State Park

Tucked along the shores of Saginaw Bay in Huron County, Sleeper State Park spreads across 723 acres of sandy beaches, wooded dunes, and wetland habitat that make Michigan’s Thumb region worth the drive. The park’s half-mile beach is the main draw — a wide, uncrowded stretch of Lake Huron shoreline where the water stays shallow and warm well into summer, making it one of the best swimming spots on the east side of the state.

Beyond the beach, a network of trails winds through hardwood forests and coastal dune ecosystems. The Ridges Nature Trail loops through old-growth beech and maple stands, while the boardwalk path crosses marshy lowlands where great blue herons and sandhill cranes are regular visitors. Birders know Sleeper as a prime stopover during spring and fall migration — the Saginaw Bay corridor funnels warblers, raptors, and shorebirds right through the park.

The campground offers over 200 sites, including modern electric sites nestled among the trees and a smaller rustic loop for those who prefer a quieter setup. Reservations fill fast for July and August weekends, so book early.

Fishing is solid along the bay for walleye, perch, and smallmouth bass, and the park’s boat launch provides easy access to deeper water. Winter brings cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on groomed trails.

Visit between late June and early September for the best beach weather, or time a fall trip around peak migration in mid-September.
