Port Crescent State Park stretches across 640 acres along the tip of Michigan’s Thumb, where the Pinnebog River meets the sandy shoreline of Saginaw Bay. It’s one of the quieter gems in Michigan’s state park system — a place where three miles of undeveloped Lake Huron beach give you room to spread out, even on busy summer weekends.

The park sits on land that once held a bustling lumber town. Port Crescent thrived in the 1860s and 1870s, but when the timber ran out, the town faded. Today, only the iron furnace ruins remain, slowly being reclaimed by the dunes and forest around them. It’s a striking reminder of how quickly the landscape reasserts itself.

Hiking trails wind through wooded dunes, wetlands, and along the riverbank, with the 2.5-mile Old Iron Furnace Trail being the standout route. Birdwatchers will find excellent habitat here — the marshes and shoreline attract migrating shorebirds and waterfowl, especially during spring and fall passages. Paddlers can explore the Pinnebog River, which cuts a calm, scenic path through the park.

The campground offers sites near the beach with reliable shade from mature trees. Sunsets over Saginaw Bay are a nightly event worth planning your evening around.

Visit between late June and early September for warm water and full facilities. Spring and fall bring fewer crowds and some of the best birding on the Thumb. Winter visitors will find solitude and cross-country skiing when snow cooperates.
