Old Mission State Park sits at the tip of the Old Mission Peninsula, a narrow finger of land stretching 18 miles into Grand Traverse Bay in northern Michigan. This 520-acre park occupies one of the most striking locations in the state — right on the 45th parallel, exactly halfway between the equator and the North Pole.

The park’s centerpiece is the historic Mission Point Lighthouse, built in 1870 and one of the most photographed lighthouses in Michigan. A short walk from the parking area brings you to the lighthouse and its rocky shoreline, where views stretch across both the East and West arms of Grand Traverse Bay. On clear days, the water shifts between deep blue and Caribbean turquoise — a signature of this part of Lake Michigan.

Visitors come for hiking along wooded trails, beachcombing on the pebbly shore, and picnicking with panoramic water views. Birding is productive here, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and raptors move through the peninsula. Kayakers often launch from the shoreline to explore the bay’s calm waters.

The drive to the park is half the experience. Old Mission Peninsula is lined with cherry orchards and award-winning wineries, making it easy to pair a park visit with wine tasting and farm stands.

Summer brings the warmest weather and longest days, but fall delivers stunning color as the orchards and hardwoods turn. Visit on a weekday to avoid crowds at the lighthouse. The park is a day-use destination — no overnight camping — so plan accordingly.
