Highland State Recreation Area
Michigan (Oakland County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Oakland County, Highland State Recreation Area spreads across 5,900 acres of some of southeastern Michigan’s most rugged and scenic terrain. Unlike the flatter landscapes typical of this part of the state, Highland delivers surprising elevation changes, dense hardwood forests, and a network of lakes and wetlands that make it feel far removed from the nearby Detroit metro area.
The park’s trail system is a standout, offering more than 16 miles of paths shared by hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The equestrian trails are particularly well-regarded, drawing riders from across the region to explore wooded ridgelines and open meadows. In winter, cross-country skiers and snowshoers take over the same routes, making Highland a genuine four-season destination.
Haven Hill, the park’s crown jewel, preserves a rare old-growth landscape with towering oaks and a historic lodge site that traces back to the 1920s. The Haven Hill Natural Area offers quieter, foot-traffic-only trails through some of the most ecologically significant terrain in lower Michigan.
Anglers will find largemouth bass and panfish in the park’s smaller lakes, while hunters can access designated areas during Michigan’s fall seasons. Swimming is available at the day-use beach area during summer months.
Spring wildflower season and peak fall color in mid-October are the best times to visit. Summer weekends draw crowds, so arriving early on Saturday mornings ensures the best parking and trail access. Highland rewards those who venture beyond the main entrance with genuine solitude and natural beauty worth discovering.
