Wompatuck State Park
Spread across 3,579 acres of Plymouth County, Wompatuck State Park is one of eastern Massachusetts’ most versatile outdoor destinations. What was once a military ammunition depot has been transformed into a sprawling network of trails, ponds, and wooded campsites that draw hikers, mountain bikers, and families year-round.
The park’s defining feature is its extensive trail system — over 12 miles of paved bike paths wind through mixed hardwood and pine forests, while unpaved trails crisscross the interior for mountain biking and horseback riding. The paved paths make Wompatuck especially appealing for families with young cyclists or anyone seeking accessible, flat-terrain riding through quiet woods.
Fishing enthusiasts will find several stocked ponds, including Aaron River Reservoir, where largemouth bass and trout are common catches. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing take over the trail network when conditions allow.
The park’s campground offers around 250 sites, many shaded and well-spaced among the trees. Electric hookups are available at select sites, making it a solid option for both tent campers and those with small RVs. Its location — roughly 20 miles south of Boston — makes it one of the most accessible camping options for city dwellers looking for a quick escape.
Visit from late spring through early fall for the best camping and trail conditions. Summer weekends fill up fast, so reservations are worth making early. Expect a quiet, wooded atmosphere with just enough infrastructure to stay comfortable.
