Mount Grace State Forest
Massachusetts (Franklin County)
Tucked into the rolling hills of Franklin County, Mount Grace State Forest spreads across 1,578 acres of rugged New England terrain that rewards those willing to explore it. The forest takes its name from Mount Grace itself, a prominent peak that offers one of the best summit experiences in north-central Massachusetts — a moderately challenging hike that ends with sweeping views of the surrounding countryside, from the Connecticut River Valley to Mount Monadnock across the New Hampshire border.
The trail network here winds through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest, crossing streams and passing through quiet ravines that feel far removed from the bustle of the Pioneer Valley below. Hikers, mountain bikers, and cross-country skiers all find something to work with among the forest’s varied terrain. Hunters use the land seasonally, and birders come for the warblers and thrushes that nest in the dense understory during spring migration.
Fall is the standout season — the hardwood canopy puts on a vivid show in early to mid-October, and the trails are dry and cool. Summer brings lush green cover and reliable shade, though mosquitoes can be persistent near water. Winter snowshoeing on the upper slopes is quietly spectacular.
The forest sits just off Route 78 near Warwick, making it accessible without being overrun. You won’t find crowds here, even on peak weekends. This is a place for people who prefer their outdoor time unhurried and unmanicured — a genuine piece of western Massachusetts backcountry that asks very little and gives back plenty.
