Pisgah State Park
New Hampshire (Cheshire County)
Pisgah State Park sprawls across 13,361 acres in Cheshire County, making it the largest property in New Hampshire’s state park system. Tucked into the southwestern corner of the state near the towns of Chesterfield, Hinsdale, and Winchester, Pisgah offers a rugged, undeveloped wilderness experience that feels worlds apart from the more polished parks in the White Mountains.
What makes Pisgah special is its sheer wildness. There are no paved roads, no visitor centers, and no concession stands — just miles of old logging roads and footpaths winding through dense hardwood forests, past beaver ponds, and along rocky ridgelines. Seven highland ponds dot the landscape, offering quiet spots for fishing and wildlife watching. Moose, black bear, and a rich variety of bird species call this forest home.
Hikers will find over 30 miles of trails ranging from easy pond-side walks to more challenging climbs with rewarding views of Mount Monadnock and the surrounding hills. Mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling, and cross-country skiing are popular on the wider woods roads. Hunters and anglers use the park heavily in season.
The best time to visit is mid-September through mid-October, when the hardwood canopy erupts in brilliant fall color and the summer crowds thin out. Spring brings wildflowers but also mud season — waterproof boots are essential through May.
Come prepared with a trail map, plenty of water, and the expectation that cell service will be spotty at best. Pisgah rewards those who arrive ready for genuine backcountry quiet.
