Canalside Rail Trail follows the historic path of a 19th-century canal and railroad corridor through Franklin County, threading along the Connecticut River between Turners Falls and Deerfield. The paved, flat trail makes this one of western Massachusetts’ most accessible outdoor experiences — perfect for families, cyclists, and anyone who wants scenery without a steep learning curve.

The trail surface is smooth asphalt, ideal for road bikes, strollers, and wheelchairs. You’ll pass through open farmland, wooded stretches, and alongside sections of the Connecticut River and its power canal. Birders should keep eyes open along the waterway — great blue herons, ospreys, and bald eagles are regular visitors to this stretch of the Connecticut River flyway.

The real draw here is the connection to Turners Falls, a small village with an outsized arts scene. Time your ride to end at one of the local cafés or catch a show at the Shea Theater. The Great Falls Discovery Center, a free state visitor center near the trailhead, offers exhibits on the Connecticut River watershed and is worth a stop before or after your ride.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions — mild temperatures and manageable crowds. Summer works fine but can get humid. Winter riding is possible on clear days, though the trail isn’t plowed.

No camping facilities exist directly on the trail, but nearby Barton Cove offers seasonal tent camping with river access just a few miles north.
