Bradley Palmer State Park
Tucked into the rolling landscape of Essex County, Bradley Palmer State Park spreads across 736 acres of dense forests, open meadows, and the winding Ipswich River. Once the private estate of attorney Bradley Webster Palmer — who entertained presidents and dignitaries on these grounds — the park retains a sense of storied elegance, with stone bridges, manicured trails, and remnants of formal gardens woven into the woods.
The trail network is the main draw. Over 20 miles of interconnected paths wind through hardwood forests and along the riverbank, welcoming hikers, mountain bikers, and horseback riders. The terrain varies from gentle riverside strolls to moderately hilly woodland loops, making it accessible for families while still offering enough variety for experienced trail users. In winter, the trails convert to excellent cross-country skiing and snowshoeing routes.
The Ipswich River provides a quieter attraction — paddlers can launch kayaks and canoes to explore the slow-moving waterway, and fishing for bass and perch is productive in the warmer months. Picnic areas with grills are scattered throughout the park, and a large field near the main entrance hosts community events and provides open space for games.
Fall is arguably the best season here, when the hardwood canopy erupts in color and the trails are at their most photogenic, though spring wildflower displays along the river run a close second.
Bradley Palmer sits just minutes from Crane Beach and the historic streets of Ipswich, making it an easy anchor for a full day exploring the North Shore.
