North Point State Park

Sitting on the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in Baltimore County, North Point State Park offers 1,328 acres where Maryland history and coastal nature come together. The park occupies the former Bay Shore Amusement Park site — you can still spot remnants of the old trolley line and foundations from the park’s early 1900s heyday, giving walks here an unexpected layer of discovery.

The real draw is the waterfront. A paved trail leads from the main parking area down to the bay, where a fishing pier stretches out over the water — a solid spot for white perch, striped bass, and blue crabs in season. Birders will find the tidal wetlands and wooded edges productive, especially during spring and fall migration when warblers and shorebirds pass through in good numbers.

The park’s trail network covers both paved and natural surface paths, making it accessible for cyclists, joggers, and casual walkers alike. The Defenders Trail loops through mature hardwood forest, offering welcome shade on summer days. A visitor center housed in a restored historic building provides maps and background on the area’s role in the War of 1812 — the Battle of North Point took place on these grounds in 1814.

Spring and fall deliver the best conditions: mild temperatures, active wildlife, and thinner crowds. Summer brings humidity but also the best fishing and crabbing.

North Point is a day-use park, so plan accordingly — no overnight camping is available. It’s a quick 20-minute drive from downtown Baltimore, making it an easy escape from the city.
