Eagle Lake State Park

Tucked into the vast, quiet expanse of Aroostook County, Eagle Lake State Park offers over 24,000 acres of northern Maine wilderness that most travelers never discover. That remoteness is exactly the point. This is deep Aroostook — where the night sky burns with stars, moose outnumber tourists, and the landscape stretches unbroken toward the Canadian border.

Eagle Lake itself is one of the Fish River Chain of Lakes, a connected waterway system that draws paddlers from across New England. The lake’s clear, cold waters support excellent fishing for landlocked salmon, brook trout, and lake trout, with early morning and late evening bites that reward patient anglers. Kayakers and canoeists can spend full days exploring the shoreline without retracing their route, and the Fish River thoroughfares link Eagle Lake to neighboring Square and Long lakes for multi-day paddling trips.

On land, the surrounding forest provides reliable wildlife viewing — moose sightings are common at dawn and dusk, particularly near boggy areas and lakeshores. Hiking trails wind through mixed hardwood and spruce forest, with fall foliage that peaks in late September, roughly two weeks before southern Maine.

The best window to visit runs from late June through September, when water temperatures allow comfortable swimming and bug pressure eases after early July. Winter brings snowmobiling along the extensive ITS trail network that connects Aroostook’s lake communities.

Eagle Lake rewards travelers willing to make the drive north. The crowds thin, the water clears, and the landscape opens into something genuinely wild.
