Spring Lake Fish and Wildlife Area has anchored outdoor recreation in Tazewell County since 1950, offering over 2,000 acres of bottomland lakes, marshes, and upland timber along the Illinois River valley. With a 4.3-star rating from more than 400 visitors, it’s one of central Illinois’s most reliable destinations for fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching.

The area’s defining feature is its network of shallow lakes and wetlands, managed specifically to attract migratory waterfowl along the Mississippi Flyway. During fall and spring migrations, birders flock here for views of tens of thousands of ducks, geese, and shorebirds moving through the Illinois River corridor. Hunting seasons draw steady crowds for waterfowl, dove, and deer, with designated blinds and controlled access areas keeping things organized.

Fishing is a year-round draw. The backwater lakes hold solid populations of largemouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill, and crappie. Bank fishing access is plentiful, and small boats with electric motors are welcome on most of the managed lakes.

Beyond the water, trails wind through upland forests and restored prairies where wild turkey and white-tailed deer are common sightings. Spring wildflower blooms make April and May particularly rewarding for hikers.

The best windows for visiting are early fall for waterfowl migration and late spring for fishing and wildflowers. Summer can bring heavy mosquito pressure near the wetlands, so plan accordingly.

Visitors should note that camping availability is not confirmed — check with the Illinois DNR before planning an overnight stay. Day-use facilities are well maintained and free to access.
