Rice Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area
Sprawling across 5,660 acres near Canton in Fulton County, Rice Lake State Fish and Wildlife Area has been drawing outdoor enthusiasts to central Illinois since 1945. Built around the shallow, marshy expanse of Rice Lake itself, this wildlife area sits within the Illinois River floodplain — a landscape shaped by seasonal water levels that creates some of the finest waterfowl habitat in the Midwest.
Hunting is the main draw here, particularly during fall waterfowl season when the marshes fill with migrating ducks and geese traveling the Mississippi Flyway. Deer and upland game hunting are also popular across the area’s mix of bottomland forest, prairie, and wetland. Outside of hunting season, birding is exceptional — the wetlands attract herons, egrets, and shorebirds, especially during spring and fall migration.
Fishing on Rice Lake and the surrounding backwater areas offers channel catfish, largemouth bass, and panfish, though access can depend on water conditions. Hiking trails wind through wooded uplands where wildflowers carpet the forest floor in April and May.
The best time to visit depends on your interests: spring for wildflowers and migrating birds, fall for hunting and foliage, and summer for fishing. Be prepared for muddy conditions in low-lying areas, particularly after rain or during high water periods on the Illinois River.
With a 4.3-star rating from visitors, Rice Lake rewards those willing to explore a wilder, less manicured side of Illinois’s public lands.
