Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park
Waimea, Hawaii (Kauaʻi County)
Russian Fort Elizabeth State Historical Park stands as one of Hawaii’s most unexpected historical landmarks — the ruins of a Russian-built fort on the sunny western shore of Kauaʻi. Constructed in 1817 by agents of the Russian-American Company, the star-shaped fort represents a brief, ambitious attempt by Russia to gain a foothold in the Hawaiian Islands. Today, the crumbling lava-rock walls offer a fascinating window into a little-known chapter of Pacific history.
Located in Waimea, the park sits near the mouth of the Waimea River, the same spot where Captain Cook first landed in Hawaii in 1778. Visitors can walk the perimeter of the fort walls, read interpretive plaques detailing the Russian-Hawaiian political intrigue behind its construction, and take in sweeping views of the coastline and Waimea Bay. The site is compact and best explored on foot — plan for about 30 to 45 minutes to see everything.
The park works well as a stop on a west-side Kauaʻi day trip, paired with nearby Waimea Canyon or a shave ice in town. There are no camping facilities on-site. Mornings offer the most comfortable temperatures, as the Waimea coast gets hot and dry by midday.
This is a quiet, reflective spot — don’t come expecting a polished visitor center or grand ruins. Come for the story: a Russian fort in Hawaii, built with local labor, abandoned within a year, and slowly reclaimed by the land. That alone makes it worth the detour.
