Makahu’ena Point Light
Hawaii
Makahu’ena Point Light stands on the rugged southern coast of Koloa, Hawaii, marking one of Kauai’s most dramatic headlands. Built in 1983, this modern automated beacon replaced earlier navigational aids that guided vessels along the island’s treacherous shoreline. The light remains active today, helping mariners navigate the Poipu coastline.
Though not open to the public for climbing, the surrounding cliffside offers spectacular views. Photographers favor golden hour and sunset, when warm light illuminates the volcanic rock and crashing surf below.
Nearby, visitors can explore Poipu Beach, Spouting Horn blowhole, and the National Tropical Botanical Garden. The point itself is a prime spot for watching humpback whales during winter months, adding to its coastal appeal.
