Waimea State Recreational Pier
Waimea, Hawaii (Kauaʻi County)
Waimea State Recreational Pier sits at the mouth of the Waimea River on Kauaʻi’s sunny west side, where red-dirt riverbanks meet the Pacific. This is one of the few public piers on the island, and it draws a loyal mix of local anglers, curious visitors, and families looking for a low-key spot to watch the sunset without the crowds found at nearby Poʻipū.
The pier itself is the main attraction — a concrete and wooden structure extending over the water where fishing is the primary activity. Locals cast lines for papio, ulua, and other nearshore species, and it’s common to see coolers lined up along the railing on weekends. Even if you don’t fish, walking the pier offers wide-open views of the Waimea coastline and, on clear days, a glimpse of Niʻihau sitting on the horizon.
The surrounding area is modest but functional, with a small park space near the riverbank suited for picnicking and stretching your legs. The Waimea River mouth creates interesting tidal patterns and birdwatching opportunities, particularly for migratory shorebirds during fall and winter months.
Best time to visit: Late afternoon through sunset, when the light on the west-facing coast is at its best and the fishing picks up. The dry west side of Kauaʻi means rain is rarely an issue, making this a reliable stop year-round.
Waimea Pier pairs naturally with a visit to nearby Waimea Canyon or a stop in the historic town of Waimea itself, where Captain Cook first landed in Hawaiʻi in 1778.
