Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area
Aiea, Hawaii (Oʻahu County)
Keaīwa Heiau State Recreation Area sits in the cool uplands of Aiea on Oʻahu’s south shore, where a sacred Hawaiian healing temple meets lush forest trails with sweeping views of Pearl Harbor. This is not your typical beach park — it’s a place where cultural history and highland hiking converge in one of Oʻahu’s most underrated green spaces.
The park’s centerpiece is the Keaīwa Heiau, an ancient medicinal temple where Hawaiian healers once cultivated herbs and practiced traditional medicine. The stone-walled heiau remains intact and is surrounded by plantings of native medicinal species, making it one of the most accessible places on the island to connect with pre-contact Hawaiian healing traditions. Please treat the site with respect — it remains culturally significant.
The 4.8-mile Aiea Loop Trail is the main draw for hikers. The moderately challenging loop winds through Norfolk pines, eucalyptus groves, and native vegetation along a ridgeline offering panoramic views of Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and the Koʻolau Mountains. On clear mornings, the views are stunning and the trail stays comfortably shaded.
Picnic pavilions and restrooms are available near the park entrance, making it a solid choice for families combining a short cultural visit with a longer hike.
The best time to visit is during the drier months from April through October, with early mornings offering the clearest views before clouds roll in along the ridgeline. The elevation keeps temperatures noticeably cooler than the coast below, so bring a light layer.
