The Cedar Keys Wilderness now contains a total of 379 acres and is managed by the Fish & Wildlife Service's Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. All of the Wilderness is in the state of Florida. In 1972 the Cedar Keys Wilderness became part of the now over 110 million acre National Wilderness Preservation System. Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve
Tucked along the Gulf Coast in Levy County, Cedar Key Scrub State Reserve protects over 5,000 acres of one of Florida’s most ancient and threatened ecosystems — the Florida scrub. Established in 1978, this reserve safeguards a landscape that looks unlike anywhere else in the state: sand pine scrub, scrubby flatwoods, and mesic hammocks that have evolved over thousands of years on old sand dunes left behind by receding seas.
What makes this reserve special is its quiet intensity. There are no flashy attractions here — just raw, undisturbed Florida wilderness that most visitors to the Sunshine State never see. The sandy trails wind through dense thickets of saw palmetto, rusty lyonia, and sand live oak, opening occasionally to reveal sweeping views of the surrounding flatlands. Birders come for the Florida scrub-jay, a threatened species found nowhere outside Florida, along with gopher tortoises and indigo snakes that call this scrubby habitat home.
Hiking and nature observation are the primary draws, with several miles of trails ranging from easy strolls to longer explorations through the backcountry. The reserve also offers opportunities for horseback riding and seasonal hunting on designated parcels.
The best time to visit is late fall through early spring, when temperatures cool down and mosquito pressure drops significantly. Summer visits are doable but prepare for heat, humidity, and insects.
Come expecting solitude, sandy footing, and a landscape that rewards patience. This is old Florida at its most elemental.
