Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park

Stretching across nearly 31,000 acres along Florida’s Gulf Coast in Levy County, Waccasassa Bay Preserve State Park protects one of the last undeveloped estuarine systems on the state’s western shoreline. Established in 2005, the preserve encompasses vast salt marshes, tidal creeks, and hydric hammock forests where the Waccasassa River meets the Gulf of Mexico — a landscape that feels genuinely remote despite sitting just south of the small town of Inglis.

This is a park for those who prefer their Florida wild and unmanicured. There are no paved trails, no visitor centers, and no developed facilities. Access is primarily by boat, which is part of its appeal. Kayakers and canoeists paddle through winding tidal creeks lined with black needle rush and oyster bars, while anglers target redfish, speckled trout, and sheepshead in the shallow flats. Birdwatchers come for the wading birds — roseate spoonbills, wood storks, and several heron species feed along the marsh edges, particularly during winter months.

The preserve has no campgrounds or overnight accommodations. Visitors typically base themselves in nearby Cedar Key or Inglis and make day trips by water.

The best time to visit is November through April, when temperatures are comfortable, mosquito pressure drops significantly, and migratory bird populations peak. Summer visits are possible but expect intense heat, humidity, and insects that mean business.
