Brandywine Springs State Park
Delaware (New Castle County)
Brandywine Springs State Park sits in New Castle County, Delaware, on land that once hosted one of the Mid-Atlantic’s most popular Victorian-era amusement parks. Established in 1956, the park preserves this layered history — stone ruins from the original resort still dot the wooded hillsides, giving hikers something to discover around nearly every bend in the trail.
The park’s terrain follows the rolling landscape carved by Brandywine Creek, with dense hardwood forests providing heavy canopy shade in summer and striking foliage in autumn. A network of trails winds through the woods, suitable for hiking, trail running, and mountain biking. The paths range from easy, flat loops to steeper routes that climb the creek valley walls, making it accessible for families while still offering a workout for more serious trail users.
Picnic pavilions and open grassy areas make Brandywine Springs a solid choice for group gatherings, and the playground keeps younger kids occupied. Birding is productive here — the mature forest canopy attracts warblers during spring migration, and the creek corridor draws woodpeckers and raptors year-round.
The best time to visit is mid-October, when the hardwood canopy peaks with color and the park is at its most photogenic. Spring is equally rewarding if you’re interested in wildflowers and migrating songbirds.
Note that Brandywine Springs is a day-use park — there are no camping facilities on-site. For overnight stays, nearby Lums Pond State Park offers full campground amenities roughly 20 miles south.
