Tucked into the rolling sagebrush hills northwest of Craig, Elkhead Reservoir State Park spreads across 2,200 acres of high-desert landscape where the water is the main event. The reservoir itself stretches over 900 surface acres, making it one of the larger boating destinations in northwest Colorado — and one of the least crowded. You can spend an entire summer weekend here without jockeying for a boat ramp slot.

Warm-water fishing draws anglers chasing smallmouth bass, northern pike, and the occasional trophy-sized walleye. The reservoir’s relatively shallow waters warm up faster than mountain lakes, extending the fishing season well into fall. Boating, waterskiing, and stand-up paddleboarding are all popular once summer temperatures settle in, typically by mid-June.

The park’s campground offers both electric and non-electric sites set along the reservoir’s southern shore, many with direct water views. Sites are well-spaced and rarely fully booked outside of Fourth of July weekend, giving campers a sense of privacy that’s hard to find at Front Range parks. A swim beach near the day-use area gives families an easy spot to cool off without hauling watercraft.

Hiking trails wind through the surrounding sagebrush and grasslands, where pronghorn sightings are common and the sunsets over the Flat Tops range put on a reliable show. Winter brings ice fishing when conditions allow, though services are limited in the off-season.
