Yampa River State Park stretches across 3,112 acres along one of the last free-flowing rivers in the Colorado River system, winding through the ranch country of Routt and Moffat counties near the small town of Hayden. Unlike Colorado’s mountain-famous parks, Yampa River is all about the water — the Yampa itself is the star, carving through cottonwood-lined canyons and open meadows that feel refreshingly uncrowded.
Floating the river is the signature experience here. The park manages 13 river access points spread across roughly 134 miles, making it a hub for rafting, kayaking, and tubing during spring and summer runoff. Anglers come for solid populations of smallmouth bass, northern pike, and trout, with the best fishing often found in the quieter stretches between Hayden and Craig. On land, the park offers hiking, wildlife watching — mule deer, bald eagles, and great blue herons are regulars — and horseback riding along the open terrain.
The headquarters campground near Hayden provides 50 sites with electrical hookups, showers, and a laundry facility, while several more primitive sites sit along the river corridor for those who prefer something quieter. Summer weekends fill up, so reservations are worth making early.
The best window to visit runs from late May through September. Spring brings higher water for thrilling float trips, while late summer offers warmer, calmer conditions ideal for families and fishing. Fall delivers golden cottonwoods and near-solitude.
With a 4.3-star rating from nearly 300 reviews, Yampa River State Park rewards visitors who come looking for authentic river country rather than postcard peaks.
