Fort Humboldt State Historic Park
Eureka, California (Humboldt County)
Fort Humboldt State Historic Park
Perched on a bluff overlooking Humboldt Bay in Eureka, Fort Humboldt State Historic Park preserves a fascinating chapter of California’s military and logging history. This compact 18-acre park sits on the site of a U.S. Army outpost established in 1853, where a young Ulysses S. Grant was stationed before his rise to Civil War fame and the presidency.
The park’s outdoor logging exhibit is its standout feature — a remarkable collection of historic logging equipment, including steam donkeys, locomotives, and mill machinery that tell the story of the region’s once-booming timber industry. Interpretive panels walk you through how old-growth redwoods were felled, transported, and milled, offering a tangible connection to the forces that shaped Humboldt County.
Restored buildings from the original fort give visitors a window into 1850s military life on California’s remote northern coast. The small but well-curated museum houses artifacts, photographs, and exhibits covering both the fort’s military period and its complicated history with the Wiyot people who called this area home long before soldiers arrived.
Walking the grounds takes about an hour, and the bay views alone are worth the stop. Fort Humboldt hosts a popular Dolbeer Steam Donkey Days event each spring, bringing vintage equipment to life with live demonstrations.
The park does not offer camping, but Eureka provides plenty of lodging options nearby. Visit between May and October for the driest weather, though the lush, fog-draped setting has its own moody appeal year-round. Rated 4.4 out of 5 stars across 484 reviews.
