Little River State Beach
California (Humboldt County)
Tucked along Humboldt County’s rugged North Coast, Little River State Beach offers 152 acres of windswept dunes, driftwood-lined shores, and dramatic Pacific views that feel worlds apart from California’s crowded southern beaches. This is a quiet, uncrowded stretch of coastline where the Little River meets the ocean, creating a dynamic landscape of shifting sands, coastal scrub, and tidal pools worth exploring.
Beachcombing is the main draw here — storms regularly deposit impressive driftwood sculptures and agates along the shoreline. Birdwatchers will find the river mouth particularly rewarding, as shorebirds, herons, and migratory species frequent the wetland habitat where fresh and salt water mix. The open dunes invite long walks, photography sessions, and simply sitting with the sound of the surf. Fishing is popular at the river mouth, and the beach sees occasional surfers willing to brave the cold North Coast waters.
Visitors should come prepared for Humboldt County weather. Even in summer, fog and cool winds are common, so layers and a windbreaker are essential. The best conditions typically come in September and October, when inland heat pushes the fog offshore and temperatures are at their mildest. Winter brings powerful storm-watching opportunities but also rough seas — stay well back from the waterline.
There are no developed campgrounds on-site, but nearby Clam Beach County Park offers basic camping just minutes away. No fees or reservations are required to visit the beach itself, making it an easy, rewarding stop along Highway 101.
