Azalea State Natural Reserve
McKinleyville, California (Humboldt County)
Tucked into the coastal forests of McKinleyville in Humboldt County, Azalea State Natural Reserve protects 30 acres of old-growth vegetation anchored by spectacular western azaleas that burst into bloom each spring and early summer. This small but remarkable reserve exists for one compelling reason: to safeguard one of the finest remaining stands of native azaleas in California, some reaching heights of more than 20 feet — far taller than most people expect from these typically modest shrubs.
The reserve’s network of short trails winds beneath a canopy of coastal forest where Douglas fir, Sitka spruce, and red alder tower overhead. During peak bloom from May through June, the azalea thickets explode with fragrant white and pink blossoms that fill the understory with color and scent. Even outside bloom season, the reserve offers peaceful walks through lush, mossy woodland that feels worlds away from the nearby highway.
Birdwatching is rewarding here year-round, and the quiet atmosphere makes it a favorite spot for nature photography and botanical study. The flat, accessible trails are well-suited for families and visitors of all fitness levels. Plan on spending 30 minutes to an hour exploring the grounds.
No camping facilities are available within the reserve. For overnight stays, nearby Clam Beach or Patrick’s Point State Park offer excellent coastal camping options just minutes away.
Visit during late May or early June to catch the azaleas at their peak. Humboldt County’s coastal climate means layers and rain gear are wise any time of year. Rated 3.9 out of 5 by visitors.
