Tchefuncte River Range Rear Light
Lake Pontchartrain · Louisiana
Standing on the shores of the Tchefuncte River in Madisonville, Louisiana, this historic lighthouse was built in 1837, making it one of the oldest light stations on Lake Pontchartrain. The modest wooden tower guided vessels navigating the river’s entrance for generations and remains an active aid to navigation today.
Though not open to the public for climbing, the lighthouse is easily viewed and photographed from the Madisonville riverfront. Golden hour and sunset provide the best lighting, with the lake as a dramatic backdrop.
Nearby, visitors can explore the Lake Pontchartrain Basin Maritime Museum, stroll the charming downtown, or launch a kayak on the Tchefuncte River for a waterside perspective.
