Rising from the shallow waters off Long Key, Florida, Tennessee Reef Light has marked this treacherous stretch of the Florida Keys reef line since 1933. This skeletal steel tower replaced earlier navigational markers that proved insufficient for the busy shipping lanes between the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico. Still an active aid to navigation, the light is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard and is not open to public access or climbing. Boaters and kayakers can approach for excellent photography, with golden-hour light from the west producing the best shots during calm winter months. Nearby, Long Key State Park offers paddling trails, snorkeling, and some of the finest wade-fishing flats in the Keys.
