St. Marks Light (Old)

St. Marks Light (Old)

Florida

Built in 1831, the Old St. Marks Lighthouse stands as one of Florida’s earliest navigational aids, guiding mariners through the shallow waters where the St. Marks River meets Apalachee Bay. The original tower suffered storm damage and was eventually replaced, but the historic structure remains a compelling piece of Gulf Coast heritage. The lighthouse is not active and is not open to public climbing. Photographers will find the best light during golden hour, when the tower contrasts beautifully against Florida’s Gulf sunsets. Nearby, the St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge offers exceptional birding and hiking, while the charming town of St. Marks provides waterfront dining and kayaking opportunities along the scenic river.
