Rising from the shallow waters off Marathon in the Florida Keys, Sombrero Key Light has guided mariners through the treacherous reef since 1858. This iron-pile screw lighthouse stands as one of the tallest reef lights in the Keys, built to warn ships away from the dangerous Sombrero Reef. Now deactivated, the tower is closed to the public and cannot be climbed, though its striking skeletal frame remains a prominent landmark.

The lighthouse is best photographed during golden hour from a boat, with warm light accentuating its ironwork against open sky. Nearby, Sombrero Beach offers excellent snorkeling, and the surrounding reef system draws divers year-round. Marathon itself provides abundant dining, fishing charters, and access to Bahia Honda State Park.
