Wind through one of New Mexico’s most dramatic landscapes on the Wild Rivers Back Country Scenic Byway, a 13-mile journey into the heart of the Rio Grande del Norte. This state-designated scenic byway descends from high sagebrush plains into a rugged volcanic plateau where the Rio Grande and Red River have carved gorges up to 800 feet deep.

Along the route, pulloffs and overlooks reveal sweeping views of the river canyons below, with layers of dark basalt cliffs dropping sharply to ribbons of green cottonwood along the water. Several trailheads invite hikers to descend into the gorge, where hot springs, ancient petroglyphs, and prime fishing spots await. The La Junta overlook, where the two rivers meet, is a must-stop for its sheer scale and beauty.

Wildlife is abundant here — watch for mule deer, pronghorn, and raptors riding thermals above the canyon rim. At night, the absence of light pollution makes this a spectacular stargazing destination.

Allow one to two hours for the drive, longer if you plan to hike. Late spring through early fall offers the best conditions, with wildflowers carpeting the mesa in May and June. This is wild New Mexico at its finest.
