Antelope Wilderness Study Area
New Mexico
Managed by the Bureau of Land Management, Antelope Wilderness Study Area preserves a sweeping expanse of rolling desert prairie in New Mexico. The open terrain offers unobstructed 360-degree views across the high desert landscape, with vegetation dominated by broom dalea and sand sage.
This remote area supports populations of pronghorn antelope and mule deer. The habitat attracts raptors, making it a productive location for birding. The WSA sits adjacent to San Pasqual Wilderness, creating an extended corridor of protected land for wildlife and backcountry exploration.
Dispersed camping is permitted throughout the study area, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites away from developed facilities. No designated campgrounds or amenities exist within the WSA boundaries. Hikers should come prepared with GPS or detailed maps, as formal trails are limited and cross-country navigation may be necessary.
Access roads are typically unpaved and may require high-clearance vehicles, particularly after rain. Spring and fall provide the most comfortable conditions for camping, with moderate temperatures and active wildlife. Summer brings intense heat, while winter can see cold nights and occasional snow.
