Presilla Wilderness Study Area sprawls across central New Mexico‘s high desert landscape, roughly 10 miles east of Socorro. The terrain features dramatic mesa formations carved by deep arroyos, with rugged limestone and sandstone hills rising above scattered coppice dunes. Desert shrub vegetation dominates the area, creating an open, austere beauty characteristic of the Chihuahuan Desert.

Hiking trails wind through this BLM-managed wilderness, offering opportunities to explore the varied topography and observe resident wildlife. Red-tailed hawks, prairie falcons, and Cooper’s hawks patrol the skies, while mule deer, gray fox, and kit fox roam the arroyos. Birders will find doves, quail, and numerous songbird species throughout the area.

Dispersed camping is permitted on BLM lands, allowing visitors to establish primitive campsites away from developed facilities. Pack all water, as none is available on-site. High-clearance vehicles are recommended for accessing remote areas.

Spring and fall provide the most comfortable conditions for extended visits, with mild temperatures ideal for hiking and wildlife viewing. Summer brings intense heat, while winter nights can drop below freezing.
