Standing on the banks of the Pasquotank River in North Carolina, Wade Point Light has guided mariners since 1855. This screwpile lighthouse is notable for its survival through the Civil War, when Confederate forces destroyed many similar beacons along the Carolina sounds. Though still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open to the public and cannot be climbed. It is best viewed and photographed from the water, with golden hour light in the late afternoon creating striking reflections off the river. Nearby, visitors can explore the charming town of Elizabeth City, cruise the Intracoastal Waterway, or visit the Museum of the Albemarle to learn more about the region’s rich maritime heritage.
