Newport News Middle Ground Light
Virginia
Rising from the waters of Hampton Roads, Newport News Middle Ground Light has guided mariners since 1891. This caisson-style lighthouse was built to mark the dangerous Middle Ground shoal, helping vessels navigate one of the busiest harbor channels on the East Coast.
The light remains active as a navigational aid, though it is not open to the public. Its striking octagonal dwelling perched atop a concrete caisson makes it a favorite subject for photographers, particularly during golden hour when the light glows against the backdrop of Hampton Roads.
Nearby, visitors can explore the Mariners’ Museum, Fort Monroe, and the Virginia War Museum. Boat tours from the Hampton waterfront offer the closest views of this historic sentinel.
