Built in 1876, Mathias Point Light stands along the Potomac River in Maryland, where it once guided vessels through one of the river’s most treacherous stretches. The screwpile lighthouse marked a dangerous shoal that had claimed numerous boats over the years. Now decommissioned, the light is no longer active and is not open to the public — visitors cannot climb the tower. It remains best appreciated from the water or nearby shoreline. Golden hour and early morning fog offer the most dramatic photography conditions, casting the historic structure in warm, atmospheric light. Nearby, visitors can explore the Port Tobacco historic district, Nanjemoy Creek, and scenic Potomac River boat launches popular with kayakers and anglers.
