Standing guard over the Potomac River since 1857, Fort Washington Light in Fort Washington, Maryland, remains an active navigational aid guiding vessels along this historic waterway. The lighthouse was constructed to complement Fort Washington, a 19th-century military fortification built to defend the nation’s capital.
