Taos Field Office
New Mexico
The Taos Field Office manages over 594,000 acres of public land in northern New Mexico, featuring dramatic high-desert terrain carved by the Rio Grande and Red River—both designated Wild and Scenic Rivers. The Rio Grande Gorge drops 800 feet in places, offering world-class whitewater rafting alongside hiking trails that trace the canyon rim.
Three developed recreation areas provide established campsites with amenities, while dispersed camping is permitted throughout most BLM lands in the field office. Popular dispersed camping areas include locations along the gorge rim and in the surrounding sagebrush mesas. A high-clearance vehicle improves access to remote sites, though many areas are reachable by standard vehicles via maintained dirt roads.
Beyond river activities, visitors find rock climbing, wildlife viewing, mountain biking, and access to prehistoric petroglyphs and historic cultural sites. The landscape supports diverse wildlife including mule deer, pronghorn, and raptors soaring above the gorge.
Spring through fall offers the best camping conditions, with May and June ideal for rafting when snowmelt raises river levels. Summer afternoons bring brief thunderstorms, while autumn provides mild temperatures and golden cottonwoods along the waterways.
