Standing guard over Winchester Bay, Oregon, the Umpqua River Light has guided mariners since 1857. The current tower is actually the second on this site — the original was destroyed by flooding just four years after construction. The replacement, distinguished by its striking red and white exterior, houses a rare first-order Fresnel lens that remains active today, making it one of the few still-operational historic lenses on the Oregon Coast. The lighthouse is not open to public climbing, but the adjacent museum and grounds offer excellent views. Golden hour and foggy mornings provide the most dramatic photography conditions.
