Sheboygan Lighthouse
Lake Michigan · Wisconsin
Sheboygan Lighthouse, also known as the Sheboygan Breakwater Light, guides vessels into the harbor at Sheboygan, Wisconsin, on the western shore of Lake Michigan. The current structure dates to 1915, when it replaced an earlier pier light that had served the port since the mid-1800s. The red cylindrical steel tower sits at the end of the north breakwater, a distinctive marker visible from miles across the lake.
Sheboygan’s harbor has served as a commercial fishing port, industrial shipping terminal, and recreational boating center throughout its history. Today the harbor primarily serves sport fishing charter boats, sailing vessels, and pleasure craft. The breakwater walk provides fishing access and views of the lighthouse, though conditions can be hazardous during storms when waves wash over the concrete structure.
The surrounding lakefront includes Blue Harbor Resort, the John Michael Kohler Arts Center, and several public parks with beach access. Sheboygan has earned recognition as a surfing destination, with Lake Michigan waves drawing wetsuit-clad surfers, particularly during fall and winter storms that generate the largest swells.
The lighthouse is best viewed from the north pier or from Deland Park beach. Summer weekends bring the most activity to the harbor area, while fall offers dramatic weather and wave conditions for photography. The Sheboygan area hosts several festivals throughout the summer, including Brat Days in August, celebrating the city’s German heritage and sausage-making tradition.
