Outer Island Light

Built in 1874, Outer Island Light stands on the northernmost point of the Apostle Islands archipelago in Lake Superior, Wisconsin. The lighthouse was constructed to guide vessels through one of the most treacherous stretches of the Great Lakes shipping lanes. Its remote location on Outer Island — accessible only by private boat — makes it one of the least visited and most pristine lighthouses in the chain. The station is not open to public climbing. Now part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, it remains an active navigational aid maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard. Golden hour and foggy mornings offer the best photography conditions. Nearby, visitors can explore sea caves, sandstone cliffs, and the other 20 Apostle Islands lighthouses.
