Gull Island Light
Gull Island · Wisconsin
Perched on a remote rocky outcrop in Wisconsin’s Apostle Islands, Gull Island Light has guided Lake Superior mariners since 1929. The steel-and-concrete tower replaced an earlier fog signal station, serving as a critical navigational aid along one of the Great Lakes’ busiest shipping corridors. Still an active aid to navigation, the lighthouse is not open to the public, though kayakers and boaters can admire its rugged silhouette from the water. Golden hour on calm summer evenings offers the best photography conditions, with the light framed against dramatic Lake Superior sunsets. Nearby, explore the sea caves of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, the restored Raspberry Island Lighthouse, and the charming lakeside town of Bayfield.
