Standing on Michigan Island since 1857, this historic lighthouse is one of the oldest in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. The stucco-over-stone tower guided mariners through Lake Superior’s treacherous waters for decades before a newer light replaced it in 1929. Though no longer active, the Old Michigan Island Light remains a striking piece of Great Lakes maritime heritage.

The lighthouse is not open to the public for climbing, but kayakers and boaters can view it from the water. Golden hour light from the east makes early morning ideal for photography. Nearby, explore the newer Michigan Island Light, sea caves along the archipelago, and the charming town of Bayfield on the mainland.
