St. Mary’s River Lower Range Front Light

Standing along Michigan’s St. Mary’s River, this historic range light once guided vessels through one of the Great Lakes’ most critical shipping corridors. Range lights worked in pairs — captains aligned the front and rear lights to stay safely within the navigation channel.

Now decommissioned, the light is no longer active and is not open to the public, though it remains a compelling subject for photographers and maritime history enthusiasts. The best light for photography comes during golden hour, when the tower catches warm tones against the river backdrop.
